Buying a diamond the safe way.
Buying a diamond without being ripped off or price gouged can prove to be a difficult task especially for a for a first time buyer. Understanding some of the lingo and how diamonds are priced can help you ensure that you you will buy what you want but also help present yourself as an informed buyer to the seller.
The most basic concepts of a diamond is the carat weight, clarity, color, cut, and shape. When you talk to a jewelry salesperson in their own language they will know that you have done some research and less likely to be taken for a ride. This can also help weed out which sellers are too low and which are too high and give a middle ground to make a more informed decision.
So where should you buy your diamond?
Buying from a private party such as craigslist or some other classified ad has its risks first of which not having any sort of return policy. The seller also won't accept any form of credit card or have financing options for you so you will most likely be pay for it up front in cash. The biggest risk is that unless you are trained in geology you will have no way of determining what you're actually getting and if it's worth the price you're paying. If you know what to look for and you know how to indetify a good diamond from a bad one or a fake then searching through classifieds can be a good way for you to save money. Otherwise, it is safer to go to any reputable seller.
Designer jewelry has it's advantages. Buying for a famous designer brand ensures that you are getting a high end piece that is not only legitimate but also cutting edge. The major disadvantage is the price tag. With the name brand comes a mark up of anywhere from 30-40% more than what you would usually pay.
Chain stores and retailers have plenty of advantages and disadvantages. They tend to offer the lowest prices due to the discount they receive for buying in bulk but as a result many of their diamonds have more flaws and massed produced settings.
For most people the best combination of all of these would be a local retailer. A local retailer is typically a store that has a decent variety to choose from and fair prices. They are usually passionate about what they are selling you and most likely got into the business because they liked doing it. This is a good formula for a buyer because they will be knowledgable and helpful but also fair and happy to sell you a diamond at a fair price.
